Mirissa is the closest point to the continental shelf and on the migratory route of whales which is situated in the Southern coast of Sri Lanka as they move closer to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, primarily to breed.
In view of the fact that the migration path from Africa to Australia lays just off Dondra Point, Blue Whales sightings is as higher as 95% in Mirissa.
Given Mirissa is one of the recorded resident blue whale colonies in the world; it is considered one of the best places to see blue whales. The main whale watching season is during November to April with recorded 95% of the sightings. Aside from the blue whales Mirissa waters is famous for dolphins, orcas, sperm whales, whale sharks, turtles and profusion of other marine life to keep you occupied throughout the stay.
