Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park, situated at the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka, holds a captivating history. Established in 1972, it was created to offer refuge to wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. Covering an expansive 30,821 hectares of land area, the park safeguards both the displaced animals and the reservoir’s catchment. Previously used for shifting cultivation, the area transformed into a haven for animals once the park was designated. It’s an essential habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants, making it a favored tourist destination and the third-most visited park in the country.

Positioned 180 km from Colombo in the island’s south-central sector, Udawalawe National Park boasts a diverse landscape. It’s encompassed by the Central Highlands’ escarpment, creating a captivating backdrop. The park’s centerpiece is the Udawalawe Reservoir, and its terrain showcases a mix of thorny-shrub jungle and grasslands. It’s akin to an African game park in its appearance.

Animals & Wildlife

The park is renowned for its abundant wildlife, with elephants taking the spotlight. Alongside herds of elephants, you can encounter water buffalo, wild boar, spotted deer, jackals, and various other creatures. Notably, Udawalawe is a haven for observing Asian elephants, with approximately 500 of them residing in the park year-round. The park offers consistent elephant sightings, with herds often containing up to 100 individuals.

For bird enthusiasts, Udawalawe National Park is a haven for birdlife and Raptors. Endemic birds like the Sri Lankan junglefowl, green pigeon, and grey hornbill can be spotted, as well as other captivating species such as the spot-billed pelican, little cormorant, and great egret. The migrant bird season from November to March brings an array of species like the common kestrel and Western yellow wagtail.

Butterflies also grace the park, with various species attracted to the satin trees. Reptiles like water monitor lizards and crocodiles add to the diversity of the park. Furthermore, the Udawalawe Elephant Transfer Home within the park plays a vital role in conserving and rehabilitating orphaned elephants, providing a heartwarming conservation effort to witness. This historical park offers an immersive experience in Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity and is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.
